Data transmission technologies commonly present in mobile devices support different transmission models and technologies, varying in range, transmission rates, and energy consumption. In all cases transmissions are subject to delays and link disruptions due to mobility and signal strength. Security is also a concern when using open air transmissions. This work presents a novel software architecture to provide delay and disruption tolerant communication for mobile devices. Using a hop-by-hop approach the architecture explores different strategies and transmission technologies for data forwarding. Confidentiality and authenticity are also provided.
