MPEG-4 Video Characterization: a Network Calculus Approach and Evaluation Framework

When a video is encoded as MPEG-4, the original video content influences the compressed video which can present long periods of constant data rates and/or short burst periods. This work shows a study of video characterization applying Network Calculus (NC) theory increasing the scope presented by Liebeherr. The results show how videos can be characterized by NC parameters –information which can be used by the video system designer to achieve a target performance. A framework is proposed to evaluate the video characterization for system design purposes.
