A Hardware Implementation of an EDF-Based Communication Protocol

The use of real-time data-buses is a basic requirement for a variety of applications such as distributed control systems and industrial production plants. This paper presents the hardware implementation of a novel real-time data communication protocol aimed at the networking of embedded systems with limited resources. The proposed communication protocol uses the EDF scheduling technique to select the highest priority packet for transmission. Packet preemption is provided in order to increase the bandwidth efficiency of the data links. Moreover, additional services such as clock synchronization and faulttolerance mechanisms are also included in the presented hardware implementation, which was designed and tested in FPGA devices.
