Customization of virtual environments aims at introducing contents according to the users knowledge, their needs and preferences. Both the identification of the user profile and an adequate structuring of its content are required for the construction of such environments. This article introduces the usage of the X3D language to represent objects with several complexity levels and to adapt virtual environments regarding the user profile. This profile is defined through user modeling techniques, classifying him or her in function of his or her knowledge on the environment.
