A codec architecture for real-time High Dynamic Range video

This paper presents a new hardware architecture for the processing of high-dynamic range (HDR) imagery. It presents a hardware encoder which is able to apply image fusion and tone mapping to convert integer-valued images with different exposure times into a single HDR image, as well as a hardware decoder which can display HDR images on regular output devices, optionally applying exposure correction. Both the encoder and decoder are implemented in such a way that no storage memory is necessary, with both input and output being a pixel stream. Also, the performance attained with this implementation is sufficient to process digital cinematography video in real-time.
