Interactive Specification of Virtual Objects’ Poses in an AR System Using Multi-Marker Tracking

This paper presents a process and tools that support authors in associating virtual objects with multi-markers. This enables them to efficiently set the location and orientation of virtual objects in an Augmented Reality (AR) environment that relies on optical tracking. To this end, a multi-marker based tracking algorithm was conceived that accounts for the accuracy of each single marker. We report the results of extensive accuracy experiments with single markers and operationalize them by defining an accuracy function. They show a specific distribution of tracking accuracy, depending on the distance and angle between camera and marker. This insight is applicable for designing the set-up of AR applications relying on optical tracking.
