Many knowledge acquisition approaches have been proposed for minimizing the cognitive effort during the knowledge-based systems development. The knowledge acquisition approach proposed here integrates the semi-formal modeling user interaction advantages with the computational benefits of formal modeling. Our approach defines a method for constructing Active Design Documents where the designer uses an integrated computational tool for constructing a semiformal model of the design process. The tool uses the semiformal model for supporting the designer during the model formalization; use a semi-automatic converter to generate an initial formal knowledge base; complete and adjust the formal knowledge base; and experiment and adjust again (if necessary) the knowledge base.
