This work presents an ontology-based approach for the automaticgeneration of a dictionary that helps professionals from different areas tointeract with a GIS (Geographic Information System ) by explaining conceptsthat are not familiar to them. The dictionary is generated by an inference layerthat processes ontologies that represent users’ knowledge and ontologies withthe concepts manipulated by the GIS. This inference layer was applied in aGIS developed in the Geoprocessing Laboratory (GEOPRO) of the GeologyDepartment at the Federal University of the Rio Grande do Norte, this GIS isused for environmental studies in oil and gas producing areas.
