Spatial Patterns of Residential Segregation: A Generative Model

Flavia F. FeitosaJoshua ReyesWalter E. Zesk

Residential segregation emerges from the interaction of manyindividuals and displays makedly different global patterns depending onspecific socioeconomic contexts. This paper presents a generative model ofsocioeconomic segregation that reproduces regular macro-patterns of thephenomenon through the specification of a minimal amount of parametersdriving the agent’s behaviour. The purpose of these experiments is to provideinsights about the emergence of certain types of segregation patterns that havebeen identified in many modern cities and measure the relation between thesedistinct outputs and the degree of segregation they produce.
