With Web 2.0, the amount of data created, stored and processed has reached a scale never seen before. Web 2.0 organizations have been implementing and using solutions beyond relational databases to tackle data on this magnitude. These non-relational databases were named NOSQL. To better understand their use cases, it is necessary to categorize, classify and compare them by both the data models they provide, and their scalability and performance attributes. This article presents a taxonomy of these new technologies, their main differences from relational databases, and the trade-offs between scalability and other system quality attributes they make.
