In a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), nodes are power constrained. As a consequence, protocols must be energy efficient to prolong the network lifetime. Network simulators are usually used to develop and analyze WSN protocols. However, most simulators employ the linear battery model to simplify the simulation process. In this work we consider a more realistic battery model when applying the Dynamic Power Management with Scheduled Switching Modes (DPM-SSM) approach to a blind flooding protocol (i.e., FLOOD). The battery model is implemented in the network simulator NS2, and the FLOOD protocol is modified to use the DPM-SSM technique. Extensive simulation results show that the FLOOD protocol can still achieve good performance results.
