Medindo e Modelando o Desempenho de Aplicações em um Ambiente Virtual

Fabrício BenevenutoCesar FernandesMatheus CaldasVirgílio AlmeidaJussara Almeida

Virtual machines (VMs) provide a suitable environment to consolidate multiple services into few physical machines, reducing costs of ownership and management. The main questions before the migration of an IT infrastructure to a virtual environment concern the performance of the applications and services on the new environment. This paper proposes a framework for predicting performance of applications on virtual systems. We propose performance models and validate the models experimentally through a case study of a Web server running on Linux, which is migrated to a Xen environment. Moreover, we provide a series of performance analysis of applications running on the Xen virtual environment. Our results highlight the causes of an extra overhead due to VMs sharing the same CPU.
