The traffic carried by modern high speed networks have drastically different characteristics. New multimedia, real time applications require that a minimum QoS be offered by the network. Therefore a lot of modeling effort has been spent in order to better understand the issues involved in multiplexing multimedia trafnc over high speed links, and to maximize the allocation of network resources. Among the main problems that cause QoS degradation is the loss of cells due to buffer overflow in the switches. The main goal of this work is to present a new algorithm to calculate efficiently the transient queue length distribution, when the queue is fed by given traffic sources, directly from the traffic model being used. Thus, the algorithm we developed allows the study of the queue length variation over a given period of time, unlike most studies that are aimed at the steady state behavior. As a byproduct, we obtain the fraction of time the queue length is above a given value, during a finite observation interval. These results are important, for instance to study the influence of different types of traffic over a high speed channel.
