The scalability of eletronic commerce services is essential for the growth and popularization of this promising new area in terms of both social impact and economic potential. One common strategy to improve the scalability of Internet servers is outsourcing, that is, the delegation of task executions to third party entities. This paper discusses the application of task outsourcing for enhancing the performance of electronic commerce servers. We present basic requirements for e-commerce tasks outsourcing and evaluate its impact on the performance of the servers, in particular the outsourcing of banner-based advertisement.
