Communication is usually the most energy-consuming event on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Thus, by reducing the transmission power required to send data packets using transmission power control techniques (TPC),it is possible to significantly reduce energy consumption and extend network life-time. This paper enhances two existing TPC techniques in WSNs and performs experiments in indoor and outdoor deployments. These experiments evaluate such techniques under different distances among nodes, concurrent transmissions and node mobility. Results show that our enhancements enabled energy savings of up to 57% over fixed transmission power communication, and an improvement of 10% in delivery rates over existing TPC protocols.
