This work analyzes the behavior of the mechanism of Pair of Packets over IEEE 802.11b networks. We propose the usage of the mechanism to monitor - in the application layer - the automatic rate control (ARC) of IEEE 802.11.The ARC activities have a strong influence over adaptive applications, but it works without notifying the application layer about its behavior. We also present the utilization of the Pair of Packets mechanism to infer the maximum throughput of IEEE 802.11 environments.
