Lately, mobile devices have grown in their utilization and resources, being even able to access Internet services and run multimedia applications. Mobile Internet Protocol version 6 (MIPv6) has been proposed as a solution to allow these devices to communicate to the Internet. However, Mobile IPv6 does not distinguish between global and local mobility, adding load to the network and doing not fast handoffs. To overcome this bad performance, hierarchical mobility management mechanisms were proposed. This article aims to analyze comparatively these different mechanisms.
