This work presents a new power control scheme for ad hoc 802.11 networks. The method, FN-ALCA (Farthest Neighbor - ALCA), allows a pair of communicating terminals to make RTS-CTS exchange at lowest power level needed to reach their farthest neighbors. Allied to this approach, our proposal takes advantage of ALCA (Asymmetric Link Collision Avoidance) scheme, a mechanism designed to overcome a known deficiency of the Basic Scheme for power control in 802.11 ad hoc networks. Through extensive simulations, we show that the proposed scheme is able to offer an expressive energy saving and an increase of network capacity, when compared to 802.11 standard and other power control schemes.
