Predicting packet losses related measurements in a multimedia network is an issue that has received considerable attention over the last years. The development of models that produce accurate results is still a research area, due to the characteristics of the traffic generated by applications. In the present article it is proposed a Markovian model to represent the traffic generated by video applications and aggregated traffic. The model incorporates a performance parameter and new descriptors obtained from the duration of traffic overloads periods with respect to a given packet rate. Studies using MPEG4 coded video traffic and WAN traffic from Abilene network show that the proposed model predicts loss rates with good precision for a relevant parameter range.
