This paper evaluates the performance of an adaptive failure detector based on artificial neural networks intended to real-time distributed control systems over a shared Ethernet network. Simulations carried out on a simple replicated control application show the advantages of the suggested detector when compared with existing known adaptive failure detection approaches. Additionally, it has been shown that the overhead caused by the use of failure detectors in this context does not compromise the performance of conventional control algorithms such as PID.
