More than a decade ago, seeking lower costs and access to skilled resources, many organizations began to experiment with remotely located software development facilities. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of case studies conducted in the last four years with four companies located in Brazil and other countries, where those companies have some distributed development strategies. The analysis is presented according to the strategies, practices and challenges identified. The results are analyzed under the Software Engineering, Software Quality, and Software Project Management point of view.
