The main purpose of this paper is to describe the state of the art in software architectures and middleware alternatives for supporting and developing applications in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). A secondary purpose is to introduce SOAB architecture (Software Architecture for Bodyworn Sensor Networks). SOAB will be useful for supporting human monitoring applications implemented in the environment of the Body-worn Sensor Networks project, a wearable and wireless micro-sensor network for monitoring human physiological health.
