Design of Conversational Interfaces

Heloisa CandelloClaudio S. Pinhanez

Recent advances in artificial intelligence, natural languageprocessing, and mobile computing, together with the risingpopularity of chat and messaging environments, haveenabled a boom in the deployment of interactive systems based on conversation and dialogue. This course explores the design and evaluation of conversational interfaces, here defined as interfaces that rely mostly on dialogue between human and computational agents, both in speech and text. The course presents the current state of conversational interfaces and the basics of the underlying enabling technology, but it is focused on design and evaluation methods which address specific challenges of interfaces based on dialogue, explored in more depth in hands-on exercises.
