An Efficient Nonparametric Blob Detection Technique Applied to Deep Underwater Environments

In this paper, we introduce an efficient method to calculate the Maximal Area Extremal Regions (MAER), based on a novel formulation for extremal regions. We use this technique to detect blobs on images captured in deep underwater environments, which are used further to detect flexible pipes. We compare the proposed algorithm by performance with a state-of-the-art technique: the Multi-level Topological Binarization (MLTB). The results show that the proposed technique is from 3 to 4 times faster than the MLTB, while achieving similar detection rates.
