Despite the fact that filamentous fungi are often used in industrial fermentation processes, their growth and differentiation are not yet understood, since their biomass is structured and therefore it is difficult to be described and quantized. The lack of appropriate tools may delay the optimization and control of the fermentation. The objective of this work is to develop this type of tool, based on digital image processing, particularly in the area of statistical pattern recognition.
