Optimistic replication for collaborative applications on the Web

The Web enables collaboration between remote users. What characterizes a collaborative application is the way users collaborate and communicate. If, for instance, users need to see updates to shared data rapidly, then collaboration should be synchronous. On the other hand, if remote users can work in disconnected mode, collaboration can be asynchronous with priority to write operations and weaker constraints on data freshness. In this paper, we focus on asynchronous collaborative applications with interrelated replicas, which are typically required on the Web. We propose an optimistic replication model forasynchronous collaborative applications on the Web with interrelated replicas. Our model is based on lazy group replication to favour update operations. We propose a protocol to detect and resolve potential conflicts, and refresh the replicas. This is based on careful log management and on the global ordering of write operations at each site. Our model is implemented in Java and XML.
