Using XML for electronic catalogs

Jo UeyamaEdmundo R. M. Madeira

Electronic commerce applications are lacking an interoperable infrastructure which provides information exchanges among consumers and suppliers to buy and sell goods. This paper proposes the use of XML as a way to implement interoperable catalogs. Three technologies (RMI, CORBA and Grasshopper Mobile Agents) that can be used to retrieve information stored in catalogs are also compared, emphasizing the advantages as well as the drawbacks in XML catalog applications. In order to describe the integration between Java and XML we discuss and simulate the use of two APIs (SAX and DOM) which are commonly used by Java programs to read XML catalogs.
