Design of a Methodology to Inject Soft Errors in Minimips Processor: Development of a Tool for Study

Soft errors generated by radiation or electromagnetic noise are the main concern in the last 20 years for design of spatial applications. The development of algorithms to increase the reliability of the system is a challenge and requires special equipments to validate the solutions. This paper presents a methodology for injection of faults in software by Coding Emulate Upset (CEU) using ModelSim verification tool. The method emulates Single Event Upsets (SEUs) through the use of available resources on the processor (IRQ, I/O ports, for example). Besides, a case study is presented for the Minimips processor. Finally, results in terms of time overhead for the application tested and effects in its behavior are discussed.
