R is an open source, multiplatform, flexible, free and extensible system for graphics and statistical computing. However, it does not have enough resources for image processing and analysis. This paper presents a new package of functionalities that allows the use of R for monospectral, multispectral and hyperspectral data analysis. Some of the most used platforms for image processing do not provide good numerical qualities, while R is numerically very reliable. In this paper we compare R and other widely known platform: ENVI/IDL. Examples of the use of R for monospectral and hyperspectral statistical data analysis are also presented.
