Two key factors to the success of a software process improvement (SPI) initiative conducted by an Implementation Institution (II) are the existence of a good strategy and a competent team. However, this is not enough due to the complex nature of the SPI activities, which demands both technical and organizational culture knowledge so that such implementation can be suitable and effective. This paper presents the lessons learned by the COPPE/UFRJ II during SPI implementation in organizations with different characteristics.
