This research investigates the use of SLMeetingRoom model, an environment model to support collaborative activities in Second Life® that occur in meetings where participants are geographically distant. The SLMeetingRoom model is composed of the a set of ten components that supports collaborative activities including communication between participants, coordination of tasks and people, cooperation between participants and awareness of work and group. This work hypothesizes that the use of SLMeetingRoom model to support meetings, provides results closest to face to face interactions. A comparative experimental study with groups of graduate students, enrolled in the discipline of Interface and Multimedia of the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) was conducted. Results show that a group using the SLMeetingRoom model has less cognitive effort and a greatest sense of presence to realize the meetings, that a group using Second Life without the SLMeetingRoom model and a group using videoconferencing systems.
