3D Dynamic Simulation of the Breast

In this paper we present our 3D simulation environment of the breast. The tool is based on Virtual Reality methods and can simulate in real time the dynamics and the deformations of a breast in 3D. Our breast models are defined using patient specific data reproducing the 3D geometry of the patient's breast surface and approximating the physical properties of the internal breasttissue layers. 3D scans of the patient are used to define the geometry of thebreast model and an experimental protocol is defined to acquire the physicalproperties of the model, as the tissue layers, their elasticity, mass and volume.The simulation environment permits a full 3D interaction with the breast modelthrough graphic and haptic interfaces, 3D navigation, multiple display modesincluding textures, multiple lights and cameras.
