This paper addresses a theoretical analysis of the assumptions of Machine Translation current practices. It aims at comparing the research between two completely different paradigms: Machine Translation and the so-called Translation Studies. It is claimed that results from the Translation Studies, although not originally committed to formal(and hence machine tractable) approaches, should be taken as a part of the Machine Translation investigation, as to define a new program of research and development.
