DESMISTIFICANDO A TRADUCAO AUTOMATICA - UM ESTUDO SOBRE SEU USO E SUA RECEPCAO

Silvia Malena Modesto Monteiro

This article aims at analyzing machine translation, concerning its use and reception, based on the point of view of students from four Master courses in the city of Fortaleza: Applied Computer Science, Health Education, Sociology and Tropical Marine Science. The data was collected through the reading of the automatically translated texts and through the answers from the text comprehension and the post-reading questionnaires, answered by the students. The research results showed that among all the questions from the text comprehension questionnaire, 76% of the answers were adequate, that is, satisfactory to the proposed questions. On the other hand, only 3% of the questions were not answered, what shows that machine translation played its role in a satisfactory way, making its readers understand the translated text and consequently answer the text comprehension questionnaires. Besides, it was shown that 100% of the students could understand the text, and that most of them consider MT a useful tool and would use it in a situation in which they needed it.
