This paper describes a prototype for an interlingua-based human-aided machine translation system from Brazilian Portuguese into a linearized script of Libras, the Brazilian Sign Language. It is the first module of an experimental system for cross-modal translation aiming at overcoming the digital divide that segregates the Brazilian deaf community. The system is also expected to be used as a Brazilian Portuguese learning tool for Libras native speakers.
