Several MAC-layer protocols for wireless sensor networks have beenproposed to schedule the sensors' radio duty-cycle reducing the energy depletion.Sensors' radio are turned off in idle periods and back to operation onlywhen it is necessary. This approach leads to an intermittent connectivity causinglarge delays and disconnections and imposes new challenges to the routingservice. This work proposes a new routing protocol, namely OR-Tree (OpportunisticRouting Tree), which is provided by the awareness of the topology dynamicsas a result of a cross-layer design with the MAC protocol. Simulationresults show that OR-Tree significantly reduces the latency and the energy consumptionwithout diminishes the delivery rate.
