Business Process Management (BPM) is a management approach that is receiving increasing interest of practitioners and scholars since last decade. However, there are very few empirical studies on BPM adoption in public sector. This paper aims at fulfilling this gap by presenting an exploratory qualitative research in four Brazilian public organizations that have started BPM programs. As results, this study mapped objectives that motivated BPM adoption, methodological approaches used, practical results and benefits obtained, and finally, facilitators and barriers faced. Some particularities identified in the BPM initiatives in public sector contribute to raise a new research agenda in this field.
