This paper presents Leda, a system for distributed staged concurrency based on the Lua programming language. The staged de- sign follows a hybrid approach, decomposing an application into a series of event-driven stages that contain thread pools. Each stage receives work requests through an event queue and schedules these requests to a configurable number of internal threads. Leda proposes a distributed model to allow stages to be seamlessly run in different processes, which can reside in distinct hosts. Our goal is to investigate the use of Lua mechanisms to extend the benefits of staged architectures to distributed environments.
